Chapter 409 - 56: The Grand Army Attacks, First Undersea Battle
They had jagged, shark-like heads atop humanoid bodies, each one standing over four meters tall.
Beneath them were even their kin, Sea Beasts—giant sharks ranging from ten to a hundred meters in length.
These Shark People laughed and cheered, urging the giant sharks beneath them to relentlessly hunt the fleeing Big-headed Fish.
It was clear that to them, the Big-headed Fish were no different than a fishing ground to be plundered.
They were not treated as Intelligent Creatures at all.
To the Shark People, the Big-headed Fish race was merely food, a free-range school of tasty morsels.
Javelins shot through the water again and again.
Each volley killed scores of Big-headed Fish.
The Shark People cheered each other on, competing to see who could kill the most Big-headed Fish.
Meanwhile, the fleeing Big-headed Fish perished one after another in despair.
Some of the Big-headed Fish tried to hide by burying themselves in the sand.
But for a Race as strong in Magic Power as the Shark People, a single sweep of their Spiritual Vision made it impossible for any Big-headed Fish to hide.
In fact, there was even a group among the hunters who made a special competition out of who could kill the most Big-headed Fish hiding in the sand.
In short, the slaughter continued unabated.
Among the Big-headed Fish, a brother and sister were swimming for their lives, just like the others.
"Why?!"
"Why must we Big-headed Fish be hunted by these Shark People!"
"Why are we so weak?!"
"Is it because we are inherently foul and inferior? Is that why no Deities favor us?"
"Or is it because the god who protected us died long ago? Is that why the other Deities won’t accept our race?"
The Big-headed Fish brother looked back, watching his kinsmen scream as they were turned into mists of blood. Terror was on his face, but it was overshadowed by a confused and desperate rage.
The brother remembered something an old fish-man, who had lived for a very long time, had told him when he was very young.
The Big-headed Fish race had once been protected by Deities.
Back then, their race had been powerful. Even an ordinary individual was no smaller than these Shark People.
But that was all a long, long time ago.
The Deity of the Shark People had killed the Deity of the Big-headed Fish.
And so, the Big-headed Fish had lost their dominion over this part of the sea.
Of course, losing their dominion was only part of it.
The most tragic part was their present reality.
Without a deity’s protection, the Big-headed Fish had grown weaker with each generation. Now, they had long since become prey for many powerful Sea Races, including the Shark People.
They were like an inferior, common school of fish, left to breed freely on the seafloor by those powerful Sea Races.
Whenever one of their tribes grew to a certain size, they would inevitably be hunted by the surrounding Sea Race.
However, perhaps it was the blessing of their fallen deity.
A few individuals from each tribe of Big-headed Fish always managed to survive the hunts.
Then, relying on their powerful fertility and their Ability to survive by eating nothing but seabed mud, their race had managed to endure in various parts of the ocean to this day.
’But is that Ability really a good thing?’
Although the Big-headed Fish brother’s intellect wasn’t high, he was still one of the sharpest among his group.
He had often thought that this very Ability might have doomed their race to tragedy from the very beginning.
’If our race had been wiped out along with our deity from the start...’
’...perhaps that would have been for the best.’
’After all, losing our Power, losing everything, becoming food for another race... a life like this is worse than not living at all.’
But now that he was truly facing death, the Big-headed Fish brother was terrified.
Only now did he understand the unimaginable strength of the will to live in the face of great terror.
Watching his kinsmen get impaled by the Shark People’s javelins.
Watching his kinsmen dissolve into bloody mist and shredded flesh.
At this moment, the Big-headed Fish brother was overcome with terror.
But this terror was also mixed with a deep sense of rage and powerlessness.
"Why!"
"If only I had Power!"
The Big-headed Fish clenched his fists, his eyes filled with despair and indignation.
"Brother, I... I twisted my leg. I can’t swim anymore..."
Suddenly, the sister he was pulling along cried out in a panic.
And indeed, the brother felt the momentum of their swimming falter.
He stared blankly at his sister’s terrified and despairing face.
At that moment, the Big-headed Fish brother suddenly stopped moving too.
He looked at his sister.
He didn’t abandon her, nor did he try to swim on.
After all, in this situation, how could he possibly outswim the Shark People who were hunting them for sport?
"It’s okay."
"Dan, your brother will always be with you."
The Big-headed Fish brother held his sister in his arms, his gaze growing calm.
He calmly looked back at the pursuing Shark People, and at the panicked members of his own race who swam past without any intention of helping.
"Brother, Dan is scared..."
"Are we going to die?"
The Big-headed Fish sister looked at her brother, her face pale.
Her frail, skinny body was trembling.
"It’s okay, Dan. We’re just going to see Mom and Dad."
"Once we enter that world, we won’t have to be afraid anymore."
The Big-headed Fish brother looked at his sister and instinctively tightened his embrace.
At this moment, silence spoke louder than words.
The two pitiful Big-headed Fish just held each other tightly and closed their eyes.
They could clearly hear the screams of their many kinsmen nearby, and even the horrifying laughter of the Shark People.
The sounds grew closer, and their grip on each other tightened.
Finally!
BOOM!!!
BOOM! BOOM!!!
A massive explosion suddenly erupted on the seabed.
A terrifying underwater current slammed the two Big-headed Fish into the mud and sand!
"Dammit! What the hell are you?!"
"How dare you trespass in the territory of the great Shark People! You deserve to die!"
"AHHHH!!!"
"..."
These furious curses had barely faded when another series of explosions rang out.
They were accompanied by the screams of the Shark People!
"What’s... what’s happening?!"
Having been knocked into the seabed silt by the terrifying current, the Big-headed Fish brother came to his senses and opened his eyes to a horrifying scene in the water above.
High above the seafloor, a large number of creatures the brother had never seen before had appeared.
These beings had heads that resembled those of fish-like Sea Race or other creatures.
But they were all incredibly tall and wore uniform Metal Armor covering their entire bodies.
Each of these beings held a strange rod in their hands.
Every time these rods fired, they shot out a terrifying column of pressurized water, like an arrow or a sphere.
When these spheres were launched, the distant water would violently explode.
These explosions didn’t produce fire, but rather a terrifying, ring-shaped cavitation blast.
In some areas, the seawater was even frozen solid in an instant!
And at the center of the ice, dead Shark People were frozen, one after another!
Against this terrifying army that had appeared out of nowhere, neither the Shark People nor their massive Sea Beast kin stood a chance.
At the very front, the Big-headed Fish brother even saw a humanoid figure in Standard Armor suddenly remove its armor and transform into a terrifying, iridescent sea serpent nearly a thousand meters long!
This terrifying sea serpent shot into the Shark People’s formation and didn’t even seem to attack physically.
In the next moment, large numbers of Shark People’s eyes rolled back in their heads as they died instantly.
’Wh-what in the world are these things?’
The Big-headed Fish brother stared dumbfounded at the scene before him.
At the same time, he turned his head and saw that behind him, the entire sky of the ocean was now filled with these armored beings.
Surrounding these armored beings—above, below, left, and right—were terrifying, long, metallic structures, moving slowly forward.
There were so, so many of them!
The Big-headed Fish brother couldn’t even begin to count how many of these strange beings there were.
As far as the eye could see, the water above the entire sea was filled with these powerful, bizarre creatures, sailing through the depths.
From beginning to end, they never once looked down at the Big-headed Fish on the seafloor.
Even when a few of the armored beings occasionally glanced their way, their expressions were harmless, as if looking at small animals.
They only killed the Shark People, even those who occasionally tried to hide in the seabed silt.
In short, they completely ignored the Big-headed Fish race.
"B-brother, wh-what are these creatures?"
The Big-headed Fish sister looked at her brother, still shaken with panic.
But her brother hadn’t snapped out of his daze yet. He just stared blankly at the army that seemed to have descended like divine soldiers, his eyes filled with endless envy and longing.
