System Of The Undead

Chapter 116: New Quest! Let’s Go!

Chapter 116: New Quest! Let’s Go!

Jason was ready for his task, the mission he was given was a strange one but he wasn’t in any position to question it.

Jason knew that Chronos would play a pivotal role in this mission even though he didn’t register it as a quest, which was unusual.

Jason walked to the wall and there, he saw Debra already waiting, she gave a knowing nod to one of the guards to which he responded with a nod of his own.

The gate was opened and the plank dropped for Jason to cross the pit of zombies.

"Good luck, I will be waiting. Tonight is my shift so as long as you come back within the next four to five hours, you should be fine," Debra assured Jason.

He had no intention of spending that much time here, he knew that he could be in and out in no time.

"Chronos, I will need your help with this or I won’t retrieve that fragment." Jason threatened his system, leveraging his position.

[Ding!]

[Quest Received!]

[Do you accept? Y/N?]

Chronos finally registered it as a quest because it knew that once Jason accepted, backing out would prove a lot more difficult than now.

"You didn’t answer me," Jason responded, not answering his system.

[Chronos will aid you to achieve your objective.]

Chronos responded and this was all Jason needed to hear.

He has survived Chronos missions until now so there shouldn’t be anything that he couldn’t handle.

"Then I accept your mission," Jason said, walking out of the community with a pistol, and a torch in hand, Chronos helped him mark the area where Debra asked him to go.

This was useful because it served as a map, Jason didn’t need to worry about getting lost.

Jason knew he could have told Rachel about it as this would only make her worry.

[Quest in progress...]

Jason noticed the change in Chronos and he didn’t consent to any update so what was going on with the system?

Jason walked and walked, he was close to where Debra had marked and it hadn’t even been up to fifteen minutes, this was all thanks to the map.

If he didn’t have it, it would have been a lot later but once again, Chronos came in clutch.

He could hear growling in the distance and braced himself for whatever it was.

Jason knew it had to be zombies and he was ready for the worst-case scenario.

He held his pistol in hand and remembered the skill he had unlocked aided his accuracy.

Now would be the best time to put it into practice and see just how much it helps his accuracy.

[Threat level: unknown!]

Chronos warned Jason of the lurking dangers that awaited him, this alone told him that he shouldn’t engage whatever it was that was responsible for the growl.

Jason knew it didn’t matter, he had to sneak about because he didn’t know what type of zombies existed anymore and he wasn’t about to find out, at least not now.

"Scan"

Jason muttered and the map beeped as a parameter with heat signatures was established, Jason realized he was surrounded by zombies.

There was no way for him to move forward without encountering one or two but he still had some time until then.

"I should probably cover myself in their guts," Jason muttered to himself.

He looked around to find a zombie that he could easily dispose of but there was none in sight. The zombies close by according to his map were clustered around each other.

If he attacked one, there is no way that the others wouldn’t perceive him.

Jason could see the shed, it wasn’t a building but this would be the perfect place to keep what Debra had asked him to receive.

He quickly rushed inside and what was waiting for him was a black duffel bag.

Jason didn’t know where it came from but it was clear that Debra had some sort of contact on the outside.

Jason couldn’t help himself, he had to see what was inside, he opened the bag but before he could snoop around, scratching could be heard outside.

The zombies must have followed him here without him knowing but he knew he had to confront them.

Luckily for him, zombies were brain-dead and didn’t know how to open the door to the shed.

This was his saving grace or he would have been fucked, he was working with time so he couldn’t pass the night here.

He had to get out of here as soon as possible, he knew anyone other than him would have run into the zombies that were around here as they didn’t have Chronos.

Jason equipped his gun, he didn’t know the kind of zombies behind that door but he knew he needed to be safe or he risked losing himself.

Jason grabbed the bag right before kicking the door down, knocking down and crushing a zombie in the process.

Jason looked over his shoulder to see two more zombies around him, he knew that shooting would be detrimental but he didn’t have time to think.

A zombie lunged at him from the right but Jason was more than capable of avoiding it, he leaped back into the shed.

The two zombies entered the shed in a bid to fill their belly with his guts but Jason had no intention of being food.

He jumped forward and left the zombies in the shed before quickly picking up the knocked-down door and holding it in place.

Jason was stronger than he was when the apocalypse started and this was becoming increasingly evident.

He managed to jam the door even though he knew it wouldn’t last, it was enough for him to stall them, taking to his heels as he left the vicinity.

These zombies weren’t trackers and Jason was aware that once he left the arena, there was nothing that they could do, they would simply return to their wandering state.

"That was a lot easier than I thought it would be," Jason thought, he couldn’t inspect what was in the bag but he had accomplished the task given to him by Debra.

Jason couldn’t carry the bag with him up and down, deciding to use a page from Sam’s book.

He found a location and buried the bag inside but it was a lot closer to the community.

This way, when he was done with whatever he was doing, he could easily grab the bag to be on his way.

"Chronos, this better not be a trap," Jason thought.

[Trap? Chronos would never do that.]

Chronos responded, Jason didn’t exactly trust it with his life, it had concealed things from him only to reveal what it was much later.

-

It took approximately twenty minutes for Jason to reach his new destination but this area was swarming with zombies, This was no doubt a nest and they were all idle.

Jason knew what the last horde he encountered did to him, he wasn’t about to risk it.

He was alone for starters and he was surrounded, he was no Sam.

He would certainly die if this horde woke up right now, the fragment was located underground.

He realized that there was a sewer here, and he had to go below ground to retrieve whatever this was.

Jason made his way down with little to no hesitation, he had his torch with him so that was one problem solved but the stench made him throw up.

Jason couldn’t hold himself back, the water was just below his knee making it hard for him to move freely but the advantage of this was that the zombies would also suffer this.

It was slimy and filled with piss but this wasn’t the only thing inside the water.

Jason didn’t want to imagine what else or he would only keep throwing up, how the fuck did a fragment reach here?

"This place fucking stinks man!" Jason thought before throwing up again, he held his ribs as it felt like he was puking his guts out.

Then he felt something grab his feet beneath the water, it was no doubt a hand and Jason responded by stomping around, luckily one of those stomps found and crushed the zombie’s head. Due to the zombie being underwater, it lacked density as it was nothing but a bloated mess that had merged with the ground.

Jason now realized that this would be a lot harder than he realized because he didn’t know what other zombies were waiting for him beneath the water.

He looked at the walls but there was no way for him to use it to guide himself, walking was his only option and the fact that he was blind, made matters worse.

He checked the map and realized he was closer to his goal than he realized.

"You’re almost there, Jason! Hang in there!" Jason thought to himself but little did he know what awaited him.
