Chapter 329: Selective Violence.
Chapter 329: Selective Violence.
Valerian stood facing the people of the settlement and said, "You all do not have to worry about the bandits. I will deal with them. Please put your close ones to rest in peace."
The people could not believe that this child was so strong. He walked over to the square and overtook the situation with several spells. The young monk was kind to them. Valerie had prayed for the deceased just as soon as Valerian got the corpses off the pikes. The people felt their hearts warm up from their gestures.
The middle-aged man stepped up and asked, "Sir, can you rescue the children taken away by those bandits?"
Valerian sighed and said, "Sir, I cannot promise you with complete confidence, but I will try my best to rescue them back."
The man clenched his fist, and then he sighed. He nodded and said, "I am Holmer. Please tell me if you need any help?"
Valerian nodded and looked around to see the people slowly taking away their deceased to the graveyard for burial. He said, "I will do my best to get these people the justice they deserve."
He was enraged but kept his temper under control. After Valerie was done with her prayers, she came to Valerian, who patted her head gently and said, "Vali, I will take you to meet a friend of mine. You must not be scared and stay with him till I finish dealing with these people. Okay?"
Valerie frowned, but Valerian said, "The enemy is stronger this time. If they took advantage and something happened to you, I will be very angry. It is a bad thing for a monk to be angry."
Valerian did not want her to know that he might kill and maim these people, so he made an excuse. Valerie was a little child and did not have much knowledge. So, she trusted Valerian. The young man said, "Do not worry. He will not take you away. Just protect you when the battle begins."
The girl nodded reluctantly. Valerian picked her up in his arms as he walked to the outskirts of the settlement. Woods surrounded the place on two sides. That was where Olivis would be hiding. As a dryad, Olivis could wrap through the trees instantly. The forest was his home ground.
The sun was coming down on the horizon, and soon it will be evening. Valerian entered the woods and said, "Olivis."
His call echoed lightly before the dryad stepped out from behind a tree. Olivis was surprised when he heard Valerian call for him. This was unusual, and the surprise became a shock when the dryad spotted a small figure in Valerian’s arms.
Valerie was also surprised. She had never seen a magical creature before. She was slightly scared and mostly curious. She opened her eyes big and pointed her small fingers at the dryad. She said, "The tree, big, big brother, the tree is moving."
Valerian looked at her disbelieving expression and could not help but chuckle. Olivis, on the other side, sighed. He was a good-tempered dryad, but whenever someone called him a moving tree, he felt helpless. As he moved closer, he sensed something was different about this little nun.
Valerian said, "I need you to look after Valerie."
The dryad was surprised because this sentence did not sound like Valerian needed his help but more like a command. Olivis furrowed his brow and said, "Do you think you can order me around because Her Excellency Boo-too favors you?"
Valerian shook his head and replied, "It is because I can kick your ass if I want to, and you know that."
Olivis was left speechless. He did not expect this young man to be so candid with him. However, he did not deny that even if he was an expected Dryad warrior, he might not be able to win over Valerian.
Thinking it was his fate, Olivis nodded and said, "Fine, I will take her with me."
Valerian’s gaze turned cold, and he said, "Wrong. You will not take her anywhere. It would be best if you looked after her while I dealt with those bandits. If you took her out of my detection range, the next time I see you, it will be with a decree to kill you. Do you understand?"
Olivis could not help but shiver when he heard the cold words. The chill Valerian radiated was stronger than ever before. It seemed like this child had become his reverse scale. The dryad nodded and said, "I understand. Also, those bandits will be here soon. I can sense their movement."
Valerian nodded and said to Valerie, "Vali, go with him. Do not worry, and he will take good care of you."
The little girl frowned and was reluctant to get away from Valerian. She did not trust anyone else but Valerian. The young man sighed and took a red dagger from his magic pouch. Valerie gazed at the dagger with her sparkling eyes. Valerian shook his head and mumbled, "Money grubber."
Valerie gazed at him and pouted. Valerian smiled and said, "Here, you can hold this dagger in your hands, and as long as this guy tries to harm you, just channel your mana through it and slash at him. This big log of wood will burn."
Valerie snatched the dagger from the young man and said, "Okay."
Now, she was even looking forward to staying with Olivis. The dryad shivered when those shining silver eyes fell on him. Valerian put the little girl down, and Valerie walked towards Olivis with her chin high. She held the red dagger in front of her chest with both hands.
Valerian found her amusing, and the girl greeted Olivis with a bow and said, "May Vita bless you."
Olivis gulped and bowed, "May Vita bless you, little sister."
Valerie smiled, and her eyes turned into a crescent. Suddenly, Olivis looked toward the settlement and said, "The bandits will be here in a few minutes."
Valerian nodded and said, "Vali, be a good girl."
Valerie nodded and said, "May Vita watch over you."
That said, the young monk dashed back to the settlement. After a long time, Valerian was using his body like this. All this time, he used his magic because he did not wish to get too violent with the people he faced. However, this particular batch of people harmed children, even dared to kill those who tried to protect their loved ones, and tied the corpses on pikes to set an example.
Since they loved making an example of the people, Valerian would also make an example of them.
...
With the thunder of hooves, the bandits entered the settlement. They were shouting and yelling as if they were a bunch of joyriders. The people in the settlement were scared; they all hid indoors and closed the doors to their houses. The actions made the bandits laugh even harder.
However, the joy came to an abrupt end. They all found that the square was different from before. A few of their pet hounds were dead, while the alive ones were entangled with vines. Someone shouted, "Boss, the corpses are gone."
The bandits’ leader raised his head and looked at the empty pikes. He let out a sonorous shout, "Who dares to cross my command? Come out if you are so daring, you pansy ass bastards."
However, not even a sound was heard throughout the settlement. The bandit leader was enraged and yelled, "Set fire to this fucking shithole. Since these bastards love the dead, send them to the other side too."
The bandits laughed, and a few mumbled a spell under their breath to conjure firewalls to float around their hands. The bandit leader said, "This is the last warning. Either you surrender the one who revolted against me, or you all leave the world."
Still, none of the people came out. The bandit leader gazed at the mage beside him, and the mage nodded. Then the latter flicked his wrist, aiming the fireball at a single-floor building. However, the fireball stopped the next moment, and gradually it vanished.
The bandits opened their eyes wide, and the mage said, "Who’s there? Come out."
The next moment, Valerian walked over slowly from the side. The scene was so silent that the square echoed with his footsteps. The young man was calm, and it did not seem like the young man was afraid of the bandits.
The bandit leader asked, "Who are you, kid?"
Valerian raised his head and said, "Your salvation."
The bandits exchanged a glance, and then they all chuckled. However, they were all startled by a shrieking wail the next moment. Valerian appeared next to a bandit and his leg whipped out a kick. The impact sent the bandit off the horse and crashed into the wall of a building. The bandit leader yelled, "Kill this bastard."
The battle began, and Valerian moved around dodging the spells. He did not target the mages earlier, because they all seemed to have a good tactical understanding of covering each others back.
